Fuel cell and battery design and operation:
  • Electrochemical engineering applied to fuel cells and batteries;
  • Electrode and cell design modeling and optimization;
  • Materials, electrode, and cell characterization (in situ methods: AC impedance, potential relaxation.

High-temperature fuel cells:

  • Molten carbonate and solid oxide fuel cell technology;
  • Component fabrication and cell assembly techniques;
  • Heat generation in fuel cells and thermal control of fuel cell systems;
  • Fuel cell applications and system integration.

Lithium battery design and thermal management:

  • Lithium primary and secondary (lithium-ion/lithium-polymer) battery technology;
  • Design optimization for maximum energy or power density and life-time;
  • Heat generation in batteries and thermal control of lithium-ion batteries.
